Cranberries, also referred to as "bounceberries" are cultivated commercially primarily in Southern Canada and Northern America. They are referred to as "bounceberries" because once they are ripe they will literally bounce. Their peak season is October through December, making dried cranberries in the pantry a mandatory item. Not only are these tart berries delicious, they are full of antioxidants, phytonutrients, and health benefits.
NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS
UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) PREVENTION: Cranberries tend to be water harvested which has been found to increase the levels of anthocyanins (a phytonutrient that recent research has connected to helping prevent UTI's, or urinary tract infections). Researchers used to believe that it was the strong acidity of cranberries that helped cure UTI's, but now believe it is related to the unique structure of the proanthocyandidins (PACS) found within the cranberry.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY BENEFITS: Its the abundant source of phytonutrients in cranberries that have shown to create an anti-inflammatory effect in the body. Most all the phytonutrients represented in the cranberry play a role in the anti-inflammatory effect. Some of these phytonutrients are proanthocyanidins, quercetin (flavonol), and phenolic acids. This anti-inflammatory effect can be beneficial when dealing with some chronic diseases.
CARDIOVASCULAR BENEFITS: Due to the high levels of antioxidants and phytonutrients in cranberries, the beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system has also been researched. The combination of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory qualities of the phytonutrients help protect blood vessel walls of the heart from damage from oxidative stress. In studies done on animals, the antioxidant benefits have shown to decrease the risk of high blood pressure.
TOP KITCHEN USES: Dried cranberries are marvelous to add bursts of tangy and sweet flavor to dishes and improve almost any dish. Use them generously in salads; trail mixes, power bars and many deserts. Cranberries also go well with chocolate and holiday dishes. Sprinkle a handful on your favorite morning bowl of oatmeal, barley or cereal, cold or hot.
